OIE: South Africa Reports FMD Outbreak
SOUTH AFRICA - An outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has been reported to the OIE by Dr Bothle Michael Modisane, Chief Director , Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Pretoria, South Africa. 
An outbreak was reported at Mbombela, Mpumalanga on 01/ 01/2012. 
Cattle affected were at a diptank adjacent to the Kruger National Park. 
Affecting cattle only, the outbreak resulted in six cases and there have been no deaths reported so far. 
The outbreak effects a defined zone within the country. 
The outbreak is thought to be due to contact with wild species. 
Control measures being applied include: 
- Quarantine
- Movement control inside the country
- Screening
- No vaccination
- No treatment of affected animals
Measures to be applied include:
- Vaccination in response to the outbreak (s)
