Safety Concerns Impact Beef Consumption At Home

JAPAN - Beef expenditure per household in July declined 10 per cent year-on-year to 1,351 Yen, due to the radioactive contamination issues that plagued Japan early in the month, reports Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

MLA reports that the July value, released by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, was eight per cent lower than the previous month, and the lowest since June 2010.

This indicates that beef sales during July were slower than the traditionally low June volumes (due to the rainy season in Japan).

Although some trade sources suggest consumers have increased their trust in imported beef, MLA says that they also believe that the issue of the radioactive contamination was significant enough to reduce consumer interest in beef overall, particularly in July.
