Switzerland Takes Step Towards Volume Control

SWITZERLAND - 16 months after the abolition of the milk quota in Switzerland, members of the parliament have decided to introduce the motion of volume control, which will be managed by milk producers.

Councillor Aebi proposed the idea of volume control earlier in the year, and on the 1st October 2010, the idea was adopted.

This puts the Swiss milk producers organisation, SMP/PSL responsible for the volumes.

Producers will continue to produce as much or as little milk as they like, but will pay an extra fee for any milk produced over thei contracted volume. This extra cost is to be used to market the milk globally.

Before the motion is put into place, it must be approved by the Upper Council.

With no volume controls in place, the market has seen unfair prices for producers and consumers alike. However there are still some producers who object to a single farm based milk quota.

The motion would once again fix a production volume for every farm. The Swiss-German organisation, Big-M says that this would be an urgently required step into the right direction.

Milk price is a concern however, and it is questionable whether it is sensible to despose excess production onto the world market.
