Vets Condemn Killing Of Light Calves

27 October 2010

THE NETHERLANDS - The Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine (KNMVD) has spoken out against the killing of healthy calves, which the industry deem to light for market.

Dutch legislation currently allows the killing of calves, lighter than 36 pounds, as the indsutry claims they have no economic value.

36 pounds is the minimum weight a calf should be, if kept for meat consumption.

The recently resigned KNMVD minister asked to what extent is the killing of commercially kept animals, which are not economically viable, ethically acceptable?
