Scottish food minister, Richard Lochhead, visiting the Anuga Food Show in Germany helping to promote Scottish produce on the European market said that beef and lamb from Scotland had an important role to play in the Scottish economy.

He said that the stringent quality assurance standards imposed in Scotland together with the PGI status of Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb presented the industry with a unique opportunity.

"This helps set us apart from other countries in the EU," he said.

During his visit, Mr Lochhead made a special presentation to the Belgium arm of the European supermarket chain Carrefour for their work in promoting Scotch meat products.

Making the presentation to Marc Vromman, the director and Carrefour's butchery department in Belgium, Mr Lochhead said: "Carrefour has devoted itself to promoting Scottish food throughout their Belgium stores.

"What lifts Scottish meat above our competitors is that our beef lamb and pork is underpinned by stringent quality assurance standards.

"This guarantees to consumers on both quality and provenance."
