TAIWAN - The veterinary authorities have sent a report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about a new outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in pigs.

The Taiwanese veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification to OIE dated 25 May.

It reports sub-clinical FMD in Yanou township in P'ing-Tung county in the south-west of the island of Taiwan. In a herd of 13,176 pigs, 280 were found to be NSP antibody-positive during routine surveillance testing on 18 May. Fifty-seven farms within the three-kilometre zone are under quarantine and close surveillance but no further cases have yet been found.

The last outbreak of FMD in Taiwan was in April 2009.
