New Canadian Dairy Complex to Benefit Science
CANADA - The government of Canada invests in a new dairy complex at Agriculture and Agri-food Canada's Research Centre in SherbrookeThe Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State (Agriculture), announced today a federal government investment of twelve million dollars to build a new dairy complex at the Dairy and Swine Research and Development Centre in Sherbrooke.
"The federal government makes sound investments that will help to open up new markets for farmers and create new jobs in the community," said Minister Blackburn. "By modernizing the research facilities in Sherbrooke, the government wants to enhance the success of the dairy sector."
The announcement is in line with the Government of Canada's Modernizing Federal Laboratories program, which will help the Centre to maintain its standing of excellence and meet the high standards of the Canadian dairy industry.
The investment will create approximately 50 jobs. In addition, the continuation of world-class scientific work in Sherbrooke will help to attract new investments, as well as ensure training and hiring of highly qualified personnel.
Planning of the site development, buildings, interior fittings, the choice of materials and equipment and efficient energy use was all done ecologically. The project design respects the growing concerns of citizens regarding architecture and the countryside, health and safety, the environment and considerations such as noise and odours with respect to harmonious co-habitation in a rural setting.
In Budget 2009, Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada committed to an accelerated investment program to provide $250 million over the next two years to modernize federal laboratories. This funding, one of several job-creation investments of the Economic Action Plan, will modernize these facilities while stimulating regional economies.
