"The trading platform will enable both producers and milk buyers to enter into contracts at 'best price'."
Etienne Terre'Blanche, managing director of the MPO

A new initiative by the Milk Producers' Organisation (MPO) and Market Square South Africa has resulted in the creation of a unique internet-based trading platform for milk producers and milk buyers.

"The trading platform will enable producers to offer their produce simultaneously to the entire South African market allowing them to sell their milk to the highest bidder, while it gives milk buyers the choice of sourcing milk from a large number of producers nationally," said Etienne Terre'Blanche, managing director of the MPO.

Trading will mainly cater for standardised six to 12 month contracts.

The trading platform will, however, also make provision for shorter term and once-off transactions.

"We believe the trading platform will enable both producers and milk buyers to enter into contracts at 'best price' based on supply and demand and will result in a more efficient market environment," said Terre'Blanche.
