A new application called NLIS Express has been developed by Meat & Livestock Australia and allows producers to contact the NLIS database using nothing more than a Bluetooth NLIS tag reader and mobile phone.

NLIS Express has been designed to run on Telstra’s new Next-G network. NLIS Express is free of charge and can be downloaded onto a compatible Next-G mobile phone.

NLIS manager Aaron Iori said NLIS Express takes the accessibility of the NLIS database to a whole new level.

"NLIS Express provides a fast, effective and economical way for producers to perform property-to-property cattle transfers electronically without the use of a computer or faxing Form A (Livestock Movements) to the NLIS helpdesk," Mr Iori said.

In order to download and start using NLIS Express producers will need to telephone the NLIS helpdesk, after which the application's software will be sent to the user's Next-G mobile phone via text message.

NLIS Express allows producers to access both their NLIS tag reader and the NLIS database. Through NLIS Express users will have the ability to add, remove, download or clear tags on their NLIS tag reader as well as being able to conduct a device query, movement report and property transfer on the NLIS database.

Not all Next-G mobile phones will be compatible with the NLIS Express application so it is recommended that those wanting to use the application contact the NLIS helpdesk or visit the NLIS section of the MLA website at www.mla.com.au/nlis to check which Next-G mobile phones can use the application.
