Genome Research Expands to Livestock Industry
US - You may be familiar with human genome research. It is where scientists study DNA to predict a person's likelihood of developing certain diseases. Well, a team of researchers right here in Central Nebraska is doing the exact same thing, but with livestock. They are seeing major advances in genome research, and they hope it can make the livestock industry more profitable.
The idea is to help producers better select their cattle.
Is a cow more or less likely to get diseases? Will it be good at getting pregnant? Which cows need less feed to gain weight?
New technology is helping Central Nebraska researchers unlock these questions.
Inside the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, scientists rely on genotyping and DNA sequencing to learn more about livestock.
