Ramadan Meat Supply Pledge
BAHRAIN - BAHRAIN is expected to have enough sheep and cattle supplies to meet demand during Ramadan, says an official. This is despite claims by butchers late last month that shortages of Australian sheep are threatening to leave them on the brink of financial ruin.Imports of sheep to Bahrain have been affected by a drought in Australia, which had earlier forced the Bahrain Livestock Company (BLC) to ration the amount of meat it supplies to butchers.
However, BLC chairman Ebrahim Zainal said that these shortages should not affect supplies during Ramadan.
"This year we have been encountering a problem because of the drought in Australia, not only in numbers but also in the size of the animal, so their weight has been reduced," he told the GDN yesterday.
"Internationally there is a shortage in the meat sector, but we are hopeful during Ramadan that sufficient stocks will arrive.
"People should be happy that meat will be available during Ramadan."
He said the BLC was expecting three to four vessels to arrive during Ramadan, bringing a total of 60,000 to 80,000 heads of sheep to Bahrain.
