Senate OKs Livestock Carrier Legislation

US - The California Senate approved this week a bill by Sen. Pat Wiggins (D–Santa Rosa) by a 33-0 vote to change a provision in state law that exempts specified livestock carriers on portions of U.S. Highway 101 from vehicle length limitations.

Senate Bill 773 would expand the current exemption on Highway 101 for livestock carriers to include those semi-trailers that measure up to 43 feet from the kingpin to the rearmost axle of the semi-trailer, as long as semi-trailers don’t exceed a total of 48 feet.

The bill is headed to the California Assembly for consideration. In her testimony to the Senate, Wiggins said SB 773 is “severely needed to save the livestock industry throughout the North Coast,” according to a news release. “Most of the beef grown in my district is shipped out of state in trailers with a 43-foot kingpin.”

Prior to 1999, the length restrictions on highways leading in and out of Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino counties made the travel of most interstate trucks illegal.
