BSE cow was fed banned bone meal

JAPAN - A cow that died last month as Japan`s 22nd confirmed case of mad cow disease had been fed meat-and-bone meal, a Japanese official has said. This is the first known use of meat-and-bone meal in Japan since it was banned in 2001 due to suspicions that it causes mad cow disease, formally called bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The case also marks the first time the feed`s use has been linked to a mad cow-infected animal in Japan, Kyodo News reported Thursday.
