Thursday Daily livestock summary

AUSTRALIA - Dalby had increased numbers, and cows dominated the export section. Values for the heavy end of the cow portion suffered losses of 11¢ to 14¢, against the large lift in prices on the previous week. Medium weight 2 and 3 scores were around 5¢ to 7¢/kg cheaper. The lightweight section of the young cattle, had a number of categories improving in value as feeders and restockers competed strongly.

Casino’s larger numbers could not maintain last weeks higher prices. Lightweight vealers sold 8c to 10c cheaper and medium weights lost 6c to 8c/kg. The heavy vealers and yearlings however met strong butcher demand and were less affected with the fall in the market. Competition was weaker with bullocks and steers selling 10c cheaper, while the cow market was back by 8c to 10c/kg.

Warrnambool vealers averaged 3c to 8c dearer, with odd sales to feedlot orders up to 10c to 12c/kg dearer. There was an increased yarding of cows, and prices for the heavy 3, 4 and 5 scores averaged unchanged to 2c dearer making from 115c to 137c/kg. The 1 and 2 scores averaged 2c to 4c cheaper, with both beef and dairy cows selling from 85c to 111c/kg.

The EYCI lifted 6.25¢ from last week to stand at 347¢/kg cwt after Wednesday sales. The Japan OX and US cow however both lost 5¢ to stand at 177.4¢ and 132.8¢/kg cwt respectively.

Hamilton had an increased offering of lambs and there were more buyers active. Lightweight 2 score lambs attracted additional restocker competition from south east SA, from equal to $4 dearer but processors paid $5/head cheaper to secure their share. Trade weights averaged 320c, the good selection of heavy weight lambs and an additional export buyer helped prices to maintain and even rise $1/head averaging 335c/kg cwt.

After Wednesday sales prices were cheaper for all lamb categories. Restocker and light lambs lost 14¢ and 12¢ from last week to stand at 311¢ and 285¢/kg cwt respectively. Trade and heavy lambs lost 14¢ and 8¢ to finish at 332¢ and 335¢ respectively, however mutton gained 16¢ to stand at 185/kg cwt on Wednesday.
