Japanese cattle slaughter falls slightly

22 February 2007

JAPAN - Japanese cattle slaughter during 2006 was estimated at 1.216 million head, 1% down from the previous year (figures sourced from the Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries).

Slaughter reached 1.266 million head in 2004, when demand for domestic beef increased after US beef import ban in December 2003, before falling 3% in 2005.

Nevertheless, the Japanese trade press Shokuniku Sokuho has forecasted a positive turn in 2007, as more companies have been rebuilding cattle herds to meet demand. The main increase is expected in Wagyu and Wagyu cross cattle.
