Livestock exports to continue

KENYA - Kenya will continue to export beef products to Mauritius and other countries in the Middle East despite the outbreak of the Rift Valley Fever (RVF).

Livestock minister Mr Joseph Munyao said there was no cause for alarm because export produce was being sourced from cleared grounds, which he said, were safe from the disease.

This news comes shortly after Garissa’s regional livestock market was closed leaving pastoralists selling animals for local consumption worried about their livelihood.

Speaking in Mombasa on Sunday, Munyao assured Kenyans that there were enough drugs to deal with the disease, adding that the meat in local markets was also safe.

"The outbreak of the disease has not affected livestock exports because we get the cattle, sheep and goats from cleared areas which are safe from any disease," he said.

The lucrative export of livestock from Kenya to the outside world has so far not been affected by the deadly RVF that has so far claimed the lives of 31 people in Northern Kenya.
