The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a draft ruling that milk and meat from some cloned animals are safe to eat.

When questioned about the FDA's ruling that no unique risks for human food consumption were identified in cattle, swine or goat clones, Mr Howard did not rule out the possibility of Australians eating cloned US beef.

"Well, anything's possible," he said during a press conference at his home in Kirribilli.

Australia has a voluntary moratorium on cloned animals and their offspring entering the food chain, but the issue is under review.

An interdepartmental committee on cloning, led by the federal Department of Health and Ageing, has been charged with recommending future regulations for Australia.
