"The seasonal increase in demand for weaner [a six-month old cattle] and carcass meat will see current prices increasing," Agricultural Economist Michela Cutts.

Ms Cutts, an agricultural economics lecturer at the University of Pretoria, which collaborates with NAMC in analysing food trends data, was presenting the quarterly food price trends in urban areas on Thursday.

The average beef prices, she said, had seen an average of 14.2 per cent increase by October this year compared to the same month last year.

She said prices of wearner meat had increased by 54 percent while grain fed carcasses had shown a 48 percent increase by October this year compared to the same month last year.

"South Africa is a net producer of beef. We do not produce enough beef to meet the demand and as a result we rely on imported beef," she explained.
