KDB chairman, Mr Reuben Chesire, said Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and the Sudan are ready markets that should be exploited to boost the local dairy sub-sector.

"We are close to these markets — let us take advantage to boost the dairy sub-sector," he added.

Chesire said export markets require milk of high quality, and that the KDB and other stakeholders will collaborate in training of milk handlers on clean milk production, hygienic handling and transportation.

Chesire said the level of processed milk will increase from 340 million litres last year to 400 million litres by end of this year. He said the level of milk processed will hit 400 million litres this year.

The country’s milk production, he said, increased from 3.2 billion litres in 2004 to 3.8 billion litres in 2005. Indications are that this year’s output level will surpass last years.

Chesire said this in a speech read on his behalf by the KDB Technical Services Manager, Dr Philip Cherono, during a dairy stakeholders workshop for the North-Rift region held at an Eldoret hotel.

"In collaboration with SITE Enterprise Promotion and International Livestock Research Institute, KDB has introduced the ‘Business Services Promotion’ (BDS) approach to address specific needs of various players in the dairy industry," he said.
