Argentina farming sector goes on strike

05 December 2006

ARGENTINA - A large swath of Argentina's farming community was on strike Monday against government price controls on beef and other restrictions, with protesting farmers clamping down on the main supply of cattle to market.

Aides to President Nestor Kirchner vowed they would hold their ground against the strike, which began Sunday in several rural provinces and is scheduled to continue until Dec. 11.

Farmers in three of four major rural confederations participated in the strike and vowed not to send wheat or other grains to market, but market observers said they did not expect the strike to cause immediate impacts on supplies.

There were no reports of violence as farms lay idle across Argentina's agricultural heartland. Interior Minister Anibal Fernandez told the independent news agency Diarios y Noticias that the government would detain any strikers who attempt to block routes to markets for farm goods.
