Mr. Cahill said that this scheme was part of the National Partnership agree-ment and he particularly welcomed the fact that this Animal Welfare Scheme will be open to the approximately 6,000 dairy farmers who run a suckler cow enterprise alongside their dairying enterprise, i.e. dual herds.

“This is a very important feature of the new Scheme and ICMSA has received firm assurances from the Department of Agriculture on this matter”, said Mr. Cahill.

Mr Cahill said ICMSA would now enter into detailed discussions on the various aspects of the new Scheme and the Association will be encouraging dairy farmers with suckler cows to apply for the Scheme.
