The supermarket, which buys 420m litres of milk a year from Dairy Crest and Robert Wiseman Dairies, is setting up a dairy development group to work with 450 farmers to increase supply-chain transparency and efficiency.

Michael Hodgson, Sainsbury's dairy and cheese category manager, said: "The milk group producers will benefit from Sainsbury's buying power and we will examine the feasibility of driving better costs for energy and utilities, finance, telephones, broadband and IT.

"We have also committed to recruiting a dairy development manager, who will work with the group to implement projects that drive innovation and efficiencies that all members can benefit from," he added.
