200 attend IFA meeting on beef and inspections

Over 200 farmers turned up for the meeting in the Shannon Key West hotel in Rooskey.
It was chaired by the Connacht vice-President Michael Silke. Farmers heard presentations from Department of Agriculture inspector Liam Fahy, IFA Director of Livestock Kevin Kinsella and beef editor from the Irish Farmers’ Journal Justin McCarthy.
Liam Fahy spoke on the cross-compliance requirements under the single farm payment for 2006.
He said that there are 18 statutory management requirements and a number of good agriculture and environmental conditions.
He stressed that it was very important farmers paid particular attention to cattle identification and registration and that all animals are properly tagged and registered on the CMMS.
In a lively question-and-answer session, farmers objected strongly to the Department’s attempt to move to ‘no notice’ farm inspections. Farmers said reasonable notice for inspection was a basic requirement.
