A 20-foot trailer packed with calves can fetch $10,000, and because of the prevalence of absentee ranchers, rustlers can sell them long before the theft is discovered.
By day, they prowl rural routes to scout for cattle in or near roadside pens. In darkness, they return to quickly load the cows and haul them off.
