Rustlers are prowling, so authorities are watching
TEXAS - The high livestock prices that have sellers smiling make Max Hartmann extra vigilant when he inspects cattle crowding the corrals each week at area auctions.A 20-foot trailer packed with calves can fetch $10,000, and because of the prevalence of absentee ranchers, rustlers can sell them long before the theft is discovered.
By day, they prowl rural routes to scout for cattle in or near roadside pens. In darkness, they return to quickly load the cows and haul them off.
