Teams of state workers will fan out across Oklahoma in the coming days to help livestock owners apply for $6.5 million in drought-relief aid.

But for some producers, it won't come close to covering the losses.

"We'll probably see a lot of producers who will get less than $100 under this program," Oklahoma Agriculture Secretary Terry Peach told The Associated Press during a press conference Tuesday in Oklahoma City.

Ranchers have until Nov. 20 to apply for money through the livestock assistance grant program. Owners of cattle, sheep, goats, bison and commercial deer and elk are eligible.

The maximum payment to any producer is $10,000. Their checks could come as soon as Jan. 1.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns announced an $800 million aid package for farmers and ranchers in late August. About $700 million of that was advance crop assistance payments and not new aid.
