Cattle were first introduced to the Texas region by Spanish soldiers, who traded enslaved natives for cattle and horses from the Caribbean. Many of these soldiers originated from Andalucía, and specifically from the Guadalquivir Marshes, the only location on the Iberian Peninsula where cattle herding via horseback was widely practiced.
