OIE Reports FMD Outbreak in North Gyeongsang Province

SOUTH KOREA - The South Korean veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease at a pig farm in North Gyeongsang Province.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Thursday, 24 July, stating that the outbreak has affected domestic pigs. On the same date, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests were conducted. Both tests resulted positive.

According to the report, a total of 1500 pigs were found susceptible to the FMD virus, serotype O, out of which three cases were reported. No deaths were recorded, and no animals were destroyed and/or slaughtered.

The OIE reports that epidemiological survey is currently being implemented. the infected animals will be destroyed.

The source of the outbreak has not yet been determined.

Several control measures have been applied in order to prevent the spread of the disease in the country.
