FMD Reported in North Korean Pigs in January

NORTH KOREA - There was an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in several pigs in one village in the P'yongyang region in January this year.

The Veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No.1 dated 24 March to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

On 16 January 2014, according to the report, six pigs in a village herd of pigs in Sunan in P'yongyang region in the west of the country showed signs of the disease and were slaughtered.

The usual measures were applied: quarantine, movement control inside the country, screening, zoning, modified stamping-out, no vaccination and treatment of affected animals. 

The status of the outbreak is described as 'continuing'. The infected premises is being disinfected and dipping/spraying is being carried out.
