Marfrig and Minerva plants in Brazil remain open despite coronavirus cases
Brazilian meat producers Marfrig Global Foods and Minerva SA have recorded COVID-19 cases among workers in cattle processing plants in mid-May, but the sites are still operational.According to reporting from Reuters, 14 workers at a Marfrig unit in Varzea Grande tested positive for COVID-19. Minerva said that it tested all of its 730 workers in the city of Araguanina, Tocantins state, which is currently in lockdown. 55 workers tested positive, but remain asymptomatic.
Brazil has reported coronavirus cases among workers at poultry and pork processing plants owned by industry giants JBS SA and BRF SA. Some of these plants have been through temporary shut downs to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Marfrig and Minerva said all workers who tested positive, along with people who had come into contact with them, had been isolated. Marfrig said it disinfected its unit. Minerva reduced production in its Araguaina unit but did not say whether it was disinfected.
