In 2017, 79.4 per cent of the dairy farms of FrieslandCampina applied some form of outdoor grazing. This is an increase of 1.2 per cent compared to the previous year. Owing to active acquisition and guidance, 314 dairy farms decided to start outdoor grazing this year.

Frans Keurntjes, Chairman of Zuivelcoöperatie FrieslandCampina U.A., said: "The growth of the number of farms applying outdoor grazing is a positive development.

"The visibility of the cows contributes to social acceptance and the image of dairy farming. We are really happy with these increase and thank all 'outdoor grazers'."

By stimulating outdoor grazing, FrieslandCampina wants to reach its objective of retaining the level of 2012 (81 per cent of the dairy farms in the Netherlands applying some form of outdoor grazing) in the year 2020. Some dairy farmers were given tailor-made advice.

Additionally, special outdoor grazing clinics were organised and FrieslandCampina offers dairy farmers who are thinking about grazing their cows, consultations in cooperation with Stichting Weidegang. This resulted in 314 farms choosing for grazing their cows in the meadows as from 2017.
