Rise in Asian Milk Collections

GLOBAL – Collections of Chinese and Indian milk processors grew last year, reports a global dairy analysis group.

Amul dairy in India and China’s Mengniu and Yili companies are leading an expanding dairy industry, International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN) data indicates.

Domestic production goals have been laid down by respective governments in both countries, explained market analysts at DairyCo.

“The Chinese Government has a target of almost doubling milk production from the current 36 million tonnes to 64 million tonnes by 2020, while India is also looking to grow and improve its dairy sector with its industry-led Dairy Vision 2030 plan,” said a DairyCo spokesperson.

“Although processors in these key emerging countries are growing, the IFCN states that global demand for dairy will continue support opportunities for production and processing.”

Topping the table, Dairy Farmers of America is the biggest global dairy based on 2013 milk intake.

With a milk intake of 27.8 million tonnes, DFA accounts for 3.7 per cent of global production, with Fonterra coming second with 22 million tonnes.

Lactalis - processing 15 million tonnes – makes up the top three, narrowly beating Nestle.

The results show an increase, albeit slight, in the amount of milk processed globally, the IFCN said.

“The top 20 companies in 2013 processed approximately 25 per cent of the milk produced and around 40 per cent of the milk collected in the world.

“In the year 2007, the top 20 companies processed around 22 per cent of milk produced which means that there was on global level only a minor increase in concentration of milk processing.”
