Securing the status of the product was a ‘major achievement’ and follows ‘years of hard work’, Meat South West chairman Peter Baber said.

He added: “We are delighted that farmers and processors have been quick to get on board to take advantage of the premium status given to the region’s beef and lamb now eligible to carry the PGI.”

Now available in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and others, the PGI meat must be from cattle and sheep fed at least 70 per cent forage.

Stock must be born, born, raised and finished in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Dorset and Wiltshire.
