Brazilian Cow Tests Positive for BSE
BRAZIL – The World Organisation for Animal Health has confirmed another Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy case, this time in Brazil’s biggest beef region, Mato Grosso.

Slaughterhouse examinations of a cohort of 49 cattle, from a holding in the far western edge of the state, revealed one twelve year old animal to show clinical signs of the disease.
All other cattle in the group tested negative for BSE.
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture reacted by saying: “This clearly shows that the identified animal is an isolated case and does not represent any risk to animal and public health.”
The notification comes less than eighteen months after an atypical case of BSE was confirmed in a mature cow in the state of Parana.
The positive animal, which was taken from a 1,177 cow enterprise, was farmed in an extensive grazing system. In addition to grass it had limited access to a salt mineral lick.
Further results are pending at a reference laboratory in Weybridge, UK.
