Spate of Lumpy Skin Disease Outbreaks Reported in Egypt
EGYPT - The General Organisation for Veterinary Services has received notification of a spate of lumpy skin disease outbreaks in the north east of the country, resulting in one cow death.In total, 101 head of cattle have been officially confirmed as infected, with estimates of susceptible cattle in excess of 3,200, the World Organisation for Animal Health reported yesterday (OIE).
The outbreak pertains to large breeding units and farm and village holdings across the Al Gharbiyah, Ash Sharqiyah, Al Jizah and Al Ismailiyah regions, close to the capital city Cairo.
More than half the cases pertain to a single farm in the Elsalhia in Al Ismailiyah with 52 cases confirmed in a herd of close to 2,000 cattle.
OIE reports detailed a vaccination programme and extensive biosecurity and surveillance across infected holdings.
A serosurveillance programme is to evaluate vaccination efficacy and awareness campaigns are educating stockmen in outbreak areas.
