Marfrig, Minerva and JBS plants are being inspected to clarify whether slaughter standards fit the Islamic Inspection Service prescriptions for meat processing.

If they do, four new additions could join the 15 Brazilian frozen beef plants already able to export to Muslim countries.

The government stressed Malaysian demand could account for 20 per cent of Brazil’s 8750 tonnes of Halal beef produced daily.

"The Malaysian market is extremely important,” said Agriculture, Livestock and Supply Minister, Luiz Marcelo Araujo.”

“First because it is a country with 80 million inhabitants and it consumes a lot of meat. The increased demand for our meat will strengthen the Brazilian trade balance. This is another market option. "
