French Farmers Speak Out Against Food Waste
FRANCE – Reducing food waste is a responsibility shared by all, says the French Farmers Union.Battling hunger and malnutrition can be managed through a coordinated effort of state commitments, charity work, personal donations and producer awareness.
This is according to the National Federation of Farmers Unions (FNSEA) in support of World Food Day 2013.
The Union has drawn attention to World Food and Agriculture Organisation figures that underline food waste and poverty issues.
The statistics say that 1.3 billion tons of food is lost globally each year as 870 million people go hungry. Messages need to be communicated to feed 9 billion people by 2050, the FNSEA warns.
Efforts have resulted in a media initiative is trying to disseminate the stark facts to the French public.
The FNSEA adds that, through social media and food banks, everyone can get involved in directly making a difference.
Contributions can be made through the Solidarity of Producers and Food Industry group, the Union added.
