Leadership training, commonly associated with large corporate businesses, is often difficult for rural business managers to access. Leslie Berger of ADAS gives an update on the Defra-funded Leadership Skills Training Programme which aims to make gaining these skills accessible to all.
What is it all about?
ADAS is managing a wide-ranging programme of leadership skills training which is ramping up from September and through the winter months. This programme, commissioned by Defra and funded by RDPE (the Rural Development Programme for England), will make high quality training in leadership and management available to large and small groups throughout the country at an affordable price.
The project provides access to 12,000 hours training in leadership and management skills with DEFRA covering 70 per cent of the training costs and participants or sponsors contributing 30 per cent.
Who should go?
The training is open to all professional farmers, growers, managers and employees working in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and related rural businesses. It is targeted at the next generation of forward thinking industry leaders who may not otherwise have access to this type of management training.
What will you learn?
Participants in this training will gain valuable leadership and management skills to support the development of their businesses as well as a more competitive and resilient rural business sector. The training is offered at basic or advanced levels targeting new as well as experienced managers. Topics include: managing change, leading teams to ensure performance, problem solving, chairing and managing meetings, effective staff management, media training and leadership in sustainability among others.
The programme also includes sought after developmental training courses designed by organisations such as the Institute of Leadership Management , the Institute of Agricultural Management’s Leadership Development Programme and the Worshipful Company of Farmers Challenge of Rural Leadership.
Who is delivering it?
ADAS is delivering the training across the country in partnership with a selection of professional rural partners including the Agriculture and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB), the National Farmers Union (NFU), Duchy College, Easton Otley College, Harper Adams University, Yorwoods, MorePeople and Promar.
