BSE Fears Allayed as OIE Maintain Health Status
BRAZIL – Trade embargoes on Brazilian beef imposed after a BSE false alarm will be lifted following maintenance of ‘negligible risk’ health status on Brazilian cattle.
The Scientific Committee of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Monday, 11 February, that the favourable health status should not be withdrawn and that trading partners are not put at any health risk because of BSE revelations late last year.
Countries including Egypt, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, China and Taiwan imposed full beef import embargoes after an ‘atypical’ case of BSE was found in a 13 animal that had died in 2010.
Jordan and Lebabon imposed bans on beef from the state of Parana, where the outbreak was suspected to have been.
Upon post mortem in the UK prion protein, responsible for the development of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), were identified but had not developed into BSE.
The Director of Animal Health, Guilherme Marques, said the main factor in the process of recognition was the measure adopted by Brazilian authorities in the prevention system.
