Delegation Bid Aims to Quash Beef Safety Fears
IRAN – A technical delegation will meet in Tehran later this week to clarify the safety of beef imports following the discovery of an atypical case of BSE in a cow from the Parana state in Brazil.

Composed of Animal Director, Guilherme Marques, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Negotiator, Colsera Lino and senior Iranian animal health technicians, the meeting will discuss the safety issues around Brazilian beef. It will consider the World Organisation for Animal Health’s approval for the exportation of beef products from the country.
The meeting comes as part of Brazilian government actions seeking assurance from destination states and regulatory bodies regarding the safety of their beef. The government has expressed eagerness in putting Iranian fears at ease.
In total, twelve countries have restrictions on Brazilian product: Japan, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, Peru, Belarus and Qatar (all Brazil), Lebanon and Jordan (only Paraná) and Chile (only meat and bone).
Iran represents 5 per cent of 2012 beef. By the third week of January this year, beef shipments increased by 45.7 per cent over the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC).
