Chile Reacts to OIE BSE Notification
CHILE - Brazilian beef will continue to be imported to Chile after the government reacted to official recognition from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) stated that the Brazilian beef safety status will not be altered from its ‘negligible’ status.

The Agriculture and Livestock Service of Chile has said they believe there is no risk of Brazilian Beef passing Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) from animals to consumers.
Imports of food stuffs made with Brazilian beef meat and bones were suspended. This was done to safeguard the disease free status in Chile if the Brazilian disease status was officially altered.
The statement places confidence in Brazilian Beef after a Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) scare caused international concern.
The suspected outbreak was dismissed by the OIE who labelled the case as ‘atypical’ and said it did not warrant a change in BSE free status. The animal in question was a 13 year old cow in Parana state.
The list of countries to ban beef imports from Brazil includes Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, China and Taiwan.
