Egypt Backs Import of Brazilian Beef
EGYPT - The Egyptian Minister of Agriculture, Mohammed Abd Almo'men Salaah, has confirmed to the Brazilian ambassador in Cairo, Marco Brandao, that Egypt has not suspended imports of beef from Brazil. The meeting between the minister and the ambassador followed action taken by the Brazilian Government to inform trading partners about the circumstances surrounding the occurrence of BSE in Paraná, in 2010.
Brazil provided clarification about the death of the animal and reaffirmed that this is a unique and not a classic case.
The executive secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), José Carlos Vaz, said Brazil has been absolutely transparent to consumers and foreign markets about the incident, demonstrating the efficiency and safety control mechanisms in place in Brazil, and highlighting the maintenance by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) of Brazil's negligible BSE risk status.
