Techniques to Bear in Mind to Vaccinate Animals Against FMD

PARAGUAY - Foot and Mouth Vaccination recommendations including directions about vaccine handling, storage, application and equipment have been issued by SENACSA, the National Service for Quality and Animal Health.

The FMD vaccine, SENACS have said, protects against serotypes: 01 Campos, A24 Cruzeiro and C3 Indaial (trivalent) and state the vaccine must be pink, homogeneous and kept from sunlight to ensure efficacy.

Equipment required for vaccination

  • Syringes : have at least 2 syringes, replacement parts and provide enough needles (15 x 18 and / or 20 x 20).
  • metal container to sterilize equipment
  • Conservative, or other equipment that serve to maintain the cold chain.
  • Vaccines: allow for 2 oer cent wastage for losses.

Application of the vaccine

  • Shake the bottle before inserting the syringe biological.
  • Check the dosing syringe before vaccination.
  • Remove the air properly
  • It should be applied in the middle third of the neck
  • The vaccinator must load the vaccine, protecting the bottle from sunlight
  • The vaccine and syringe must be kept cold (not in the pocket or in your hand)
  • Dose: 5 ml for cattle and buffaloes in all categories
  • In case reflux apply total dose

Cold chain vaccine

  • Keep the vaccine at a temperature between 2 º 8 º C permanently
  • The vaccine must be transported in coolers from veterinary to livestock farms with plenty of ice, in the ratio of 3 parts ice to 1 part vaccine.
  • The vaccine should not be frozen, cover the jars of sun rays
  • The cold water does not maintain the cold chain
  • The loaded syringes must stay within the conservative capped and remove them only at the time of the application.
  • It must control the temperature of the vaccines before the start of vaccination and more hours in the day high temperatures and record it in a spreadsheet
  • Do not use the ice of vaccines for other purposes.

Important to note

  • The animals to be vaccinated should be healthy and rested
  • They should not be subjected to abuse of any kind or situations that produce stress (castration, branding, palpations)
  • The animals exhibiting apparent disease should not be vaccinated until they have a diagnosis. Only those can receive vaccines healthy.
  • It is important to note that the success of vaccination depends not only used but also the good biological management (transport, storage and application) thereof.
  • Sterilization and disinfection of equipment, to be performed in order to reduce the possibility of post-vaccination undesirable inflammation.

Owner's Obligation

Producers of any scale arerequired to vaccinate for the period specified by SENACSA.

Remember

  • The vaccine does not harm the animal, induce abortions, or leave residues residues in animal products.
  • The vaccine is a safe product which has been approved by the laboratory of SENACSA.
  • All vaccine vials should have a stamp of approval by the SENACSA.
