During September 2011 and August 2012, Mexico exported 1,618,947 head of cattle to the US, Turkey and Jordan. Turkey and Jordan are relatively new markets for Mexico.

More cattle were exported than ever before due to the long term drought affecting Mexican ranchers.

Exports to the US were 12 per cent higher than the previous year.

The majority of these exports came from Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Tamaulipas, Neuvo Leon and Zacatecas.

Exports were also strong due to the country's improved stance on animal health.

Incidences of bovine tuberculosis fell, in line with the country's eradication plan.
