UK Milk Production Down

UK/IRELAND - The UK average farm gate price of milk (excluding bonuses) in July was 26.38 pence per litre, 0.83 pence per litre lower than in July 2011, according to the latest figures from the Department of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs.

The Defra report also shows that in July the average butterfat content of UK milk was 3.94 per cent, compared with 3.92 per cent in July 2011.

In July, the average protein content of UK milk was 3.20 per cent, compared with 3.23 per cent in July 2011.

The Irish CSO report shows that domestic milk intake by creameries and pasteurisers was estimated as 612.1 million litres for July 2012. This was 8.6 per cent below the corresponding 2011 figure.

Comparing the July 2012 milk produce figures with those for July 2011 shows that the total milk sold for human consumption fell by 0.7 per cent to 40.4 million litres and butter production was down by 5.9 per cent to 16,000 tonnes.
