East Kazakhstan Reports More FMD

KAZAKHSTAN - The country's veterinary authorities have reported another outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the eastern region of Borovoe.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received Follow-up Report No. 6 on 12 June 2012. The affected populations comprise cattle, sheep and pigs.

Out of 250 susceptible cattle, 43 cases were identified. While no deaths were recorded, 145 animals were destroyed. A total of 30 pigs showed signs of susceptibility. No cases or deaths were reported, and no pigs were destroyed.

Following local authorities decision, quarantine and restriction measures were lifted in Sholakkargaly on 20 March 2012 and in Bota, Degeres, Ushbulak and Kindiktas on 26 March 2012.

Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: The outbreak in Borovoe (East Kazakhstan) was previously notified on 4 June 2012 as due to serotype A.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
