South America Works to Eradicate FMD
SOUTH AMERICA - With 85 per cent of all cattle in South America, free of foot and mouth disease (FMD), efforts are underway to eradicate the disease from the remaining cattle population, said Dr Guilherme Marques, President of the South American Commission for the Fight Against Foot and Mouth Disease (COSALFA).Two recent outbreaks in Paraguay last September and this January has not changed the schedule for the Eradication Programme (PHEFA), he said.
It is hoped that the disease will be completely eradicated by 2020. To do this, Dr Marques said that the veterinary services need to be strengthened by the different governments, and that vaccination is essential.
