Record Growth in Milk Production in 2012 Q1

RUSSIA - In the first quarter of 2012 Russia experienced a record growth in milk production and its cattle herd, compared with the same period last year.

Thus, from January to March 2012, milk production increased by 279,000 tons (4.5 per cent) compared to the same period in 2011.

The greatest gains were experienced in the Republic of Bashkortostan (21.4 per cent), Dagestan (16.5 per cent), Kabardino-Balkaria (12.2 per cent), Voronezh (15.1 per cent), Sverdlovsk (12 per cent), Belgorod (10.2 per cent) and Vladimir (10 per cent) of the region. Total milk production increased in 64 regions.

In turn, the number of cattle increased by 223,000 units, including more than 195,000 cows.

This milk production/herd increase, in the first quarter, is the first increase observed in the last 22 years. In 2012 there are plans to achieve growth of over one million tons of milk.
