Dairy Farming Boosted by Dutch Imports

RUSSIA - The agriculture industry in the productive Kostroma region is importing dairy cattle to boost dairy production in the region.

For the second year running Holstein-Friesen cattle have been imported from the Netherlands to the Parfenevsky district.

The Rosselkhoznador livestock farm imported 165 head of cattle.

Before they were sent to Russia, the animals were kept in quarantine and checked for tuberculosis, paratuberculosis, leukemia, brucellosis and bluetongue, as well as receiving the necessary vaccinations and veterinary treatment.

Before the animals were brought into the district, the housing was thoroughly disinfected and cattle and small livestock in farms in a 20 mile radius of the farm were vaccinated for bluetongue.

The the measures were taken under the supervision of specialists from Rosselkhoznadzor in the Kostroma and Ivanovo regions, together with specialists of the Department of Veterinary APC Kostroma region.

In November another batch of cattle is to be imported and theis Rosselkhoznador say should greatly increase the potential for milk production in the region.
