Heavy Cattle Take A Step Back
AUSTRALIA - The weight of the rising A$ and increasing supplies across Queensland markets contributed to export categories taking another step back this week, with heavy steer prices down 10¢ on last week, to average 357¢ nationally. The return of drier conditions throughout Queensland enabled cattle movements and turnoff to increase during the first two weeks of April, albeit with supplies still well below the near record numbers reported during February and early March.
Demand for young cattle remains robust, with the EYCI finishing Thursday at 410.25¢/kg cwt - still 17 per cent above the same period last year. Medium cows also edged back 3¢ this week, to 309¢/kg cwt.
