French cattle and sheep farmers have hit out at the European authorities for failing to tackle the threat from a foot and mouth disease epidemic.

They have called on the European Commission to finance and organise a scientific research programme into the disease, which they fear could become prevalent in continental Europe and its spread accelerated by global warming.

The French cattle breeders association, FNSEA, says that the present compensation arrangements in Europe are completely inadequate.

And they are concerned that there is no harmonisation of the compensation arrangements across Europe.

They say that the measures need to be overhauled to adequately compensate breeders for any economic losses.

The FNSEA spelt out its concerns to the French Agriculture minister at a private meeting last week, and they have called for a clear and proper compensation plan to be drawn up.
